sunday in joao pessoa/natal.

:today we spent our sunday:
-attending church in joao pessoa.
-visiting the most eastern point of south america.
-eating churrasco.
-visiting a monument of joao pessoa.
-seeing the governor's palace.
-visiting a convent!
-traveling two hours by bus to Natal located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
-arrived at a beautiful beach front hotel in Natal.

my favorite part about today was walking through the old convent and learning the history of that place.  It is called the Church of San Francisco but was actually dedicated to Saint Anthony I believe. The murals on the ceiling depicted Saint Francisco's life up until he met Christ. It was interesting to learn about the various parts of the church.  It is in the baroque style, so there were so many details everywhere.  I believe it was built sometime in the 1700s.  It was also interesting to see all the different saint statues & learn what each of them represented and who you should pray to depending on the situation.  We also learned that most likely it was the slaves that painted the murals on the ceiling and that's why there is no indication on who painted it-no signatures or registries.  It was all very beautiful!

we arrived in natal tonight after a two hour bus ride from joao pessoa. we are staying in a beach front hotel that is absolutely breathtaking! Tomorrow we will be visiting the sand dunes that Natal is famous for.

until then!
